How many movers do I need? (And how much help to book)

Crew size depends on stairs, carry distance and how ready you are, not just the number of bedrooms.

More helpers means a shorter day, but not always a cheaper one. Some jobs don't have room for a third or fourth person. The right crew size depends on how much is moving and how hard it is to move.

Start with the amount, then adjust

As a rough guide:

  • A few items, a studio or a lightly furnished 1-bedroom: 2 helpers.
  • A typical 2- to 3-bedroom home: 2 to 3 helpers.
  • A full 3-bedroom or larger, or a house with a garage and basement: 3 to 4 helpers.

Treat these as starting points, not rules. The factors below move you up or down.

When you need a bigger crew

  • Stairs. Every flight slows every trip. Walk-ups above the second floor often need an extra person.
  • A long carry. Long hallways, a far-off loading dock or a truck parked down the street.
  • Tight time windows. Buildings that only allow moves during set hours, or a container pickup that's already scheduled.
  • Heavy furniture. Solid-wood dressers, sleeper sofas and large appliances take two people per piece.

When a smaller crew is enough

  • Everything packed and sealed before the crew arrives.
  • A truck or container parked right at the door.
  • A reserved freight elevator.
  • Furniture already taken apart.

When a bigger crew doesn't help

In a small apartment or a narrow stairwell, extra people wait their turn. In a tight space, two organized helpers can be faster than four.

Specialty items are separate

Adding more helpers doesn't solve pianos, safes, pool tables and hot tubs. They need the right equipment and sometimes a specialist. Each one should be checked on its own.

Get a starting estimate

The GoodHands planner asks about your home, each address's stairs and access, packing, and heavy items. It then suggests a crew size and how long the job usually takes. It's a planning estimate based on a simple model, not a quote.
