Hilo rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.
Key rule: In Hilo, a vehicle or trailer left unattended on a public or private street for more than 24 hours is deemed abandoned and may be taken into custody by police.
In Hilo, Hawaiʻi County code deems any vehicle or trailer left unattended on a street for more than 24 hours abandoned, with a $250 fine for the owner plus removal costs, and bars parking on the paved part of a highway except in designated areas. No object may be placed in a County street without a permit, and the chief of police can issue special permits to park contrary to the parking rules or to back a vehicle up to the curb for loading. Freight loading zone stops are capped at 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. except Sundays and holidays, and Aupuni and Pauahi Streets have a 30-foot no-parking buffer around driveways.
