Parking and permits

Lawrence rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Lawrence, a vehicle wider than eight feet, longer than 20 feet or taller than eight feet may not park on a street in a residence district for more than two hours, except while actively loading or unloading or when it displays a use of right-of-way permit.

In Lawrence, City Code Section 17-411 limits vehicles over eight feet wide, 20 feet long or eight feet tall to two hours on residential streets, except while actively loading or unloading; a use of right-of-way permit for temporary large-vehicle parking can extend this for up to seven consecutive days with the neighbors' consent. The city says a moving truck may park where street parking is normally allowed, but a right-of-way permit may be needed where parking is banned or metered, and a roll-off dumpster goes in the street only when it cannot safely sit on private property and then needs a right-of-way permit. No vehicle may stay on a public street more than 48 hours, and once two inches of snow fall, plows work around cars left on the street.
