Michigan City requires a permit from the city engineer to put a dumpster or commercial trash container on the public right-of-way, with the request stating the site and how long it will be there; extensions past 30 days need the board of public works and safety. Trailers may be parked on a street only while hitched to a licensed vehicle, freight vehicles of one-ton capacity or more can't stop downtown from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 4:30 to 6 p.m., and vehicles in residential areas must stay off lawns except on an approved driveway. When a snow removal condition is declared, snow routes are cleared of parking and an odd-even side-of-street ban runs from 6 a.m. to midnight; vehicles parked in violation may be towed.
