Parking and permits

Hammond rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Hammond, a truck of 5,000 pounds or more can be parked on a city street for no more than two hours in any 24-hour period, unless it is being used for work in the immediate vicinity and no other suitable parking is available nearby.

In Hammond, the city code limits trucks of 5,000 pounds or more, trailers and similar vehicles to two hours of street parking in any 24-hour period, with an exception for vehicles used for work nearby when no other suitable parking is close, and a separate section bans parking or storing automobile, boat and house trailers on any street or alley. Obstructing a street, alley or sidewalk with any vehicle or material is unlawful, and police assign loading zones on request only to applicants who get a permit and put up two signs. Any vehicle is limited to 96 consecutive hours on a street, and after a snow removal emergency is declared the mayor can order odd/even-side parking.
