Parking and permits

Richmond rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Richmond, utility trailers and commercial vehicles (including trailers) may not stay parked on a street in an R-1, R-2 or R-3 residential zone longer than reasonably needed to make a delivery or to load or unload belongings being moved to or from a nearby home.

Richmond's code bars utility trailers and commercial vehicles (including trailers) from streets in residential zones except for the time reasonably needed for a delivery or to load or unload items being moved to or from a nearby residence, and a resident parking such a vehicle by the home for a planned trip may do so for no more than 24 hours. Commercial motor vehicles with more than a one-ton load capacity may park on residential streets only while loading or unloading, and on any street for no more than 24 hours. On designated residential permit streets every parked vehicle needs a permit, and handling boxes between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. in a way that creates a noise disturbance across a dwelling boundary is prohibited.
