Moving into a permit-parking zone: visitor and temporary permits, by city
In residential permit-parking districts, a rental truck or a helper's car can be ticketed without the right permit. Here are the official rules for every city we've researched.
Updated October 24, 2026

Residential permit parking keeps commuters and event traffic off neighborhood streets. On moving day, the rental truck, the crew's vehicle and your own car may not have a permit for the zone. Some cities sell daily visitor permits. Some exempt vehicles that are actively loading. Some offer temporary permits for new residents.
We recorded the official permit-parking rules for 703 cities.
Moving-day checklist for a permit zone
- Check whether your old or new street is in a permit district by looking at the street signs or the city's permit map.
- Ask about visitor or temporary permits for the truck and any helper vehicles, and how far ahead you have to apply.
- Find out whether loading is exempt and for how long. A loading exemption usually doesn't cover a truck parked overnight.
- Apply for your own resident permit early after you move in, since many cities need proof of address first.
