Parking and permits

Commerce Township rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Commerce Township, a portable storage or moving container may sit in a home's driveway or designated parking area for up to 72 hours per calendar year without a permit, but not on a public road.

Commerce Township's zoning ordinance lets a portable storage or moving container sit in a residential driveway or parking area for up to 72 hours a year without a permit, never on a public or shared private road, and the Building Director may then issue a temporary permit for up to four weeks that must be posted on the container. Commercial vehicles, which the ordinance defines to include vehicles used to carry goods even for personal purposes, may not be parked or stored on residential property except temporarily during a delivery, pickup, drop off or service run. Residents' trailers may not be stored in a front yard or front yard driveway.
