East Lansing rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.
Key rule: In East Lansing, no vehicle may stay parked on any street or alley between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. without permission from the East Lansing Police Department.
East Lansing bans parking on every street and alley from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. unless the police department grants permission, which is capped at 20 nights a year and not given where snow plowing or other city work is expected; some streets are also posted no parking from midnight. Occupying a street with materials or machinery for any purpose needs a permit from the building official or city engineer, although temporary obstructions incidental to moving things to and from the abutting property are allowed. Several neighborhoods have residential permit parking, and Michigan State University's residence halls close for winter break on December 18, 2026.
