Parking and permits

Bellevue rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Bellevue, the city does not allow a POD moving container or dumpster in the right of way except in very limited cases, never downtown or on arterial streets, so in residential areas it must go in the driveway.

Bellevue keeps PODs, dumpsters and other storage containers out of the right of way: in residential areas they go in the driveway, and a Right of Way Street Use permit is possible only for very steep driveways, for no more than 48 hours. Parking a vehicle on a public sidewalk needs a right of way use permit, a vehicle may not stay on the same block of a public street for more than 24 hours, and some neighborhoods are Residential Parking Zones where guests need an RPZ permit. In a citywide snow event, residential streets may not be cleared at all.

Bellevue moving questions

Can I put a POD or moving container on the street in Bellevue?

Generally no. Bellevue does not permit PODs, dumpsters or other storage containers in the right of way except in very limited circumstances, and never downtown or on arterial streets. In residential areas they must go in the driveway, though a Right of Way Street Use permit may be issued if your driveway is steeper than a 15% grade.

If Bellevue does permit a container in the street, how long can it stay?

No longer than 48 hours. It may be no larger than 20 feet long by 8 feet wide and must sit on wood or other risers to protect the roadway.

Can the moving truck sit partly on the sidewalk in Bellevue?

No. Bellevue says parking a vehicle on a public sidewalk is illegal at any time without a right of way use permit from the city.

How long can a rental truck stay parked on a Bellevue street?

Unless signs say otherwise, no more than 24 consecutive hours on either side of the same block of a public street. Also avoid leaving it within 10 feet of a mailbox between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on mail days.

Do I need a parking permit for the truck in a Bellevue Residential Parking Zone?

RPZs restrict non-residential parking on some neighborhood streets, and guests are exempt only if they park legally and display an RPZ permit. Bellevue offers temporary permits, which should be requested at least 2 business days in advance.

Will my Bellevue street be plowed before move day?

Not necessarily. In a citywide snow event even priority routes may get limited attention and residential streets may not be cleared at all, and the city's large equipment sometimes cannot safely drive steep residential streets.
