Chesapeake rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.
Key rule: In Chesapeake, a utility trailer not hitched to a registered vehicle may sit on a residential street only for loading or unloading, and the code counts enclosed trailers used privately as utility trailers.
In Chesapeake, City Code 74-250 lets an unhitched utility trailer, including an enclosed trailer used privately, sit on a residential street only for loading or unloading, and keeps trucks with more than one ton of carrying capacity off every city street from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless they are loading or unloading. Any vehicle left on a public street for more than 48 hours is in violation, and parking on a sidewalk or the strip between sidewalk and curb is prohibited. The streets code makes it unlawful to place objects that may obstruct a sidewalk, street or right-of-way, and allows packing or unpacking on the sidewalk only for items too large for the door.

Chesapeake moving questions
Can a moving truck park on a residential street in Chesapeake?
City Code 74-250 bars trucks with a carrying capacity of more than one ton from parking on any city street between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. except for loading or unloading. The code sets the limit by carrying capacity and does not say whether a particular rental truck exceeds it, so check your truck's rated capacity.
Can I leave a rental trailer on the street in Chesapeake?
Only while loading or unloading. A utility trailer not connected to a legally registered vehicle may not park on a residential street otherwise, and the code says utility trailers include enclosed trailers used for private purposes.
How long can a car stay parked on a Chesapeake street?
City Code 74-243 makes it unlawful to leave any vehicle on a public street for more than 48 hours. Parking on a sidewalk or the strip between the sidewalk and curb is also prohibited, and parked vehicles may not block a mailbox from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Can we stage furniture and boxes on the sidewalk in Chesapeake?
Not as a rule. City Code 66-8 makes it unlawful to place objects that may obstruct a sidewalk, street, right-of-way or alley, and 66-6 allows packing or unpacking on the sidewalk only for items too large to fit through the door, without unreasonable delay.
