Parking and permits

San Mateo rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In San Mateo, a moving pod on the street needs a Public Works encroachment permit that only residents can apply for, takes at least 10 business days to process, and allows the container for up to seven days.

In San Mateo, only residents can apply for the Public Works encroachment permit needed to put a temporary storage container (POD) on the street, and the city issues one only when there isn't room on private property; a container in a driveway for a move needs no permit if it stays off the sidewalk and street. Processing takes at least 10 business days, and a permitted container can stay up to seven days. City code bans parking oversized vehicles, including those over 22 feet long or rated above 10,000 pounds, on residential-zone streets, but exempts loading or unloading people or property.
