Renting a truck or a portable container (POD) for a move in California? Each city sets its own rules for containers, dumpsters, trucks and trailers on the street. This guide lists the move-day rules we found for 289 California cities. Every rule links to its official source and shows the date we checked it.

Rules, fees and lead times change. Use this guide to know what to ask. Then check the city's page before you book a container delivery or park a truck.

Key rule: In Los Angeles, a business operator may not park a commercial vehicle or any vehicle over 22 feet long on a mostly residential street, but city code makes an exception while a vehicle is loading or unloading property and more time is reasonably needed.

    Los Angeles makes it unlawful for a business operator to park or leave standing a commercial vehicle, or any other motorized vehicle longer than 22 feet, on certain public streets.

Key rule: In Alhambra, no vehicle may stop, stand or park on any street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. except as the city code provides, such as with an overnight parking permit.

    Annual overnight permits are not issued to commercial vehicles over 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, trailers, or vehicles wider than six feet or longer than 20 feet.

Key rule: In Arcadia, a roll-off bin or similar device on a street, parkway or sidewalk needs a city street placement permit, and the permit runs no more than three weeks plus a possible one-week extension.

Azusa

Key rule: In Azusa, an oversized vehicle (over 23 feet long, 80 inches wide or 96 inches tall) may not be parked on a street for more than 60 minutes between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m., or more than 30 minutes between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., unless it is making pickups or deliveries to the adjacent building.

Baldwin Park

Key rule: In Baldwin Park, a vehicle exceeding a maximum gross weight of three tons may not park on any street except a designated truck route, where parking is limited to two hours.

Bell

Key rule: In Bell, commercial vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 6,000 pounds or more may not be parked on any city street except while actually picking up or delivering goods, and no vehicle may park on a street between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Key rule: In Bell Gardens, any vehicle longer than 20 feet or wider or taller than 80 inches may not be parked on a public street between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless it has a city temporary overnight permit.

Key rule: In Bellflower, a trailer may not be parked on any street unless it is attached to a motorized vehicle, and trailers are barred from streets between midnight and 6 a.m. unless they are moving trailers that meet the code's conditions.

Key rule: In Beverly Hills, temporary moving-van "No Parking" signs must be bought at City Hall and posted in front of the move location no less than 72 hours before the move date.

Key rule: In Burbank, a street use permit from the Public Works Director is required to place a storage bin, container or other object on any city street or alley, and the permit lasts no more than seven days.

Carson

Key rule: In Carson, no oversized vehicle, defined as one over 20 feet long, 80 inches wide or 85 inches tall, may be parked or left standing on any public street, alley or public place except as the city's oversized-vehicle rules allow.

Key rule: In Cerritos, no vehicle may be parked on any street, alley or public place between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. unless it has a city-issued overnight permit, and temporary permits are limited to passenger vehicles.

Claremont

Key rule: In Claremont, no vehicle may park on a city street for more than one hour between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. without an overnight parking exemption, and a trailer needs its own exemption.

Key rule: In Compton, no vehicle may be parked on a street for more than five hours unless it is a passenger car designed to carry up to nine people or another vehicle the code expressly excludes.

Key rule: In Covina, parking on city streets between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. is prohibited without a valid parking permit.

Culver City

Key rule: In Culver City, parking a moving truck, POD or dumpster on the street takes a city reserved-parking permit, and the city's NO PARKING signs must be posted at least 48 hours before the restriction.

Key rule: In Long Beach, a storage container or dumpster in the street needs a Public Works Temporary Occupancy Permit acquired three business days before delivery, from an approved City vendor, with No Parking signs posted 24 hours ahead.

  • Are there placement limits, such as distance from corners, driveways or hydrants?

  • If it snows, will the street be plowed, and where can the truck stand?
