Parking and permits

Albany rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Albany, you can reserve curb space for a moving truck with an Emergency No Parking sign from the Albany Police Department, requested at least four business days ahead by calling 518-434-5791.

In Albany, the Police Department issues Emergency No Parking signs to reserve on-street space when off-street loading space isn't big enough; requests go in at least four business days ahead, cost $25 to $100 depending on the number of spaces, and a POD or dumpster also needs a Sidewalk Barricade Permit first. City code bars tractors and commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds from standing on a street for more than three consecutive hours unless actively loading or unloading, and bans unattached trailers on city streets. When a snow emergency starts, cars must move to the even side of the street for the first 24 hours, and UAlbany residence halls close December 16, 2026 and reopen January 17, 2027.
