Parking and permits

Nashville rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Nashville, a trailer, dumpster or storage unit placed in the Metro right-of-way needs a Trailer / Dumpster permit from the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT), listed at $10 a day up to $2,000.

In Nashville, putting a trailer, dumpster or storage unit in the street or other Metro right-of-way takes an NDOT Trailer / Dumpster permit. Metro Code bans large vehicles (USDOT Class 4 and up, including box trucks and larger trailers) from parking in the right-of-way without an NDOT permit and from parking there overnight; they may stand only in daylight while actively serving a home, must leave a clear travel lane, and must move within thirty minutes of finishing. In residential permit parking areas, service vehicles on a call to a home are exempt from posted time limits if they display a work slip.

Nashville moving questions

Do I need a permit to put a POD or storage container on a Nashville street?

Yes. Placing a trailer, dumpster or storage unit in the Metro right-of-way takes NDOT's Trailer / Dumpster permit. NDOT lists the fee as $10 a day, up to $2,000, with a $30-a-day violation fee.

Can I park a rental box truck on a Nashville street overnight?

Not if it counts as a large vehicle under Metro Code § 12.40.180 (USDOT Class 4 or higher, which includes box trucks). Large vehicles may not park overnight in the public right-of-way, and parking, stopping or standing one there needs an NDOT permit.

How long can a large moving truck stand in the street while we load?

Without a permit, a large vehicle may stand in the right-of-way only during daylight while actively serving a home or business, with a clear travel lane left open, and it must be moved within thirty minutes after the work ends. If it has to stop in an active traffic lane, the stop may not exceed thirty minutes, and the driver must use flashers and put cones or warning triangles behind it.

Can the crew park on a residential permit-parking street?

Metro Code exempts service vehicles on a service call to a home in the permit area from posted time limits, as long as they display a work slip with the residence's name and address in the windshield.

When do Vanderbilt students move out in spring 2027?

Vanderbilt's residence halls close for non-graduating students at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2027.
