Parking and permits

Fort Collins rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Fort Collins, it's unlawful to park a motor vehicle over 6,000 pounds empty weight on any street or other public right-of-way.

Fort Collins' traffic code bars parking motor vehicles over 6,000 pounds empty weight or 20 feet long, and any trailer, RV or truck tractor, on a street or other public right-of-way. Commercial vehicles and trailers are exempt only while they're being expeditiously loaded or unloaded, and must comply again once loading is done. A dumpster, storage unit or POD in the right-of-way needs an encroachment permit from City Engineering, and residential permit (RP3) zones limit non-residents to one two-hour visit per zone per day.
