Do you need a permit for a moving container?
Where a POD or moving truck can go in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and nearby cities, who applies for the permit, and what to ask before delivery day.
Updated October 13, 2026
Every city has its own rules for portable containers and rental trucks on the street. This guide lists them for the Denver metro, Boulder County, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. Find your city below. Every rule links to its official source and shows the date we checked it.
Rules, fees and lead times change. Use this guide to know what to ask. Then check the city's page before you book a container delivery.
The short version
- A container in the street usually needs a permit. Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Lakewood, Lafayette, Longmont, Arvada and Thornton all handle containers in the street or right-of-way through a city permit. Louisville sends dumpsters and roll-offs in the street through Public Works. Westminster issues right-of-way permits only to licensed city contractors.
- Aurora is the exception. It doesn't allow pods or dumpsters on public streets at all. A driveway placement may be considered through its Temporary Use Permit program. Aurora's rules
- Often only the container company can apply. In Denver and Arvada, the container company must hold a city license and apply for the permit. Ask your container company about it when you book.
- Driveways are often simpler. Arvada requires no permit for a container in a private driveway or garage. In Lakewood, a moving POD on private property for fewer than 3 days needs no permit.
- Residential streets are often last to be plowed. Colorado Springs waits for 6 inches, Westminster for more than 8, and Thornton plows residential streets only in a long, heavy storm. Boulder, Fort Collins, Longmont, Lakewood, Arvada and Lafayette don't routinely plow them. In winter, plan where the truck will stand if the street isn't cleared.

Moving labor in Grand Junction
What to ask before delivery day
- Can the container go in my driveway, and does that need a permit here?
- If it has to go in the street, who applies for the permit: me or the container company?
- How long can it stay, and how far ahead do I need to apply?
- Are there placement limits, such as distance from corners, driveways or hydrants?
- If it snows, will the street be plowed, and where can the truck stand?
