Parking and permits

College Park rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In College Park, any type of trailer is barred from residential streets from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless the City Manager grants a permit, so a rental trailer should be loaded and gone before evening.

In College Park, City Code § 184-8 keeps trailers, boats and RVs off residential streets from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. without a City Manager permit, and bars certain large vehicles (for example, over 8,500 lb GVW and over 21 feet long or six feet wide) from residential streets at any time, except while actually loading or unloading. No vehicle may sit on a street more than 48 hours, and permit-parking areas require a permit during posted hours, though the City Manager may waive that for visitors or people doing business with residents for a day. University of Maryland residence halls close for winter break on December 21, 2026, and spring move-in starts January 24, 2027.

College Park moving questions

Can I leave a rental trailer on the street overnight in College Park?

Not without a permit. The City Code bars any type of trailer, along with boats and RVs, from public streets in residential zones between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless the City Manager issues a permit, which is given only for good cause and for no more than 24 hours unless the Mayor and Council grant longer.

Can a moving truck park on a College Park residential street?

Large vehicles on the § 184-8 list, such as any vehicle over a manufacturer's 8,500-pound GVW specification that is also over 21 feet long or six feet wide, may not be parked on residential-zone streets at any time. The rule does not apply while a vehicle is actually loading or unloading, so check your truck's specs and move it once the work is done.

How long can a vehicle stay on a College Park street?

No more than 48 hours in a row without a permit from the City Manager.

Where can the crew park in a College Park permit parking area?

Every vehicle needs a residential permit during posted enforcement hours. The City Manager may, for good cause, waive the restriction for visitors or people doing business with residents for a given day or night.

When are the University of Maryland move dates this year?

UMD residence halls close at 7 p.m. on December 21, 2026 for winter break, and spring move-in begins January 24, 2027, at 10 a.m. for students new to housing and at noon for returning students.
