Parking and permits

Rockville rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Rockville, the city code keeps larger trucks (over 10,000 lb GVW, more than four wheels, or 96 inches or more wide) off residential streets except while they are actually loading or unloading, so plan to park the truck only for the hours you're working.

In Rockville, City Code Section 23-27 keeps larger trucks, truck tractors and most trailers off residential streets except while actually loading or unloading. Pods and dumpsters can go in the city right-of-way only when Public Works agrees they can't safely sit on private property, and work that closes a sidewalk or parking lane needs a Public Works permit. In permit parking districts, service and delivery vehicles serving a home are exempt and each household gets two free visitor permits, while a declared snow emergency bans street parking for residents who have a driveway.

  • Containers, trucks and the street

Pods and dumpsters may go in the city right-of-way or an easement only if it is shown, to Public Works' satisfaction, that they cannot safely be placed on private property.

  • Containers, trucks and the street

A Public Works permit is needed for work that requires closing a sidewalk, a travel lane or a parking lane, and work must not start before the permit is approved.

Rockville moving questions

Can a rental moving truck park on a residential street in Rockville?

Section 23-27 of the City Code covers trucks rated over three-quarters ton or over 10,000 pounds GVW, with more than four wheels, or 96 inches or more wide. Those may not be on a residential street except while actually loading or unloading property. GVW here is the figure listed in the NADA Used Car Guide, so check your rental's rating and move the truck once loading is done.

Can I leave a rental trailer on the street in Rockville?

Only while loading or unloading. The code bars trailers (other than camping, boat or travel trailers) from stopping, standing or parking on residential streets except while actually loading or unloading people or property.

Can I put a POD or dumpster in the street in Rockville?

Only if it's shown that it can't safely go on private property, as Public Works decides. Work that closes a sidewalk, travel lane or parking lane needs a Public Works right-of-way permit, and work must not start without an approved permit.

Where does the moving crew park in a Rockville permit parking district?

The code exempts service and delivery vehicles that are serving homes in the area. Each household also gets two free visitor permits, which residents themselves may not use.

What happens if it snows on moving day in Rockville?
