Parking and permits

Brookhaven rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Brookhaven, no part of a roll-off container or dumpster may sit on a public road, within six feet of one, or on a right-of-way or sidewalk at any time.

These rules come from the Town of Brookhaven code, which governs the Town's unincorporated hamlets; incorporated villages such as Patchogue and Port Jefferson have their own codes. The Town keeps roll-off containers and dumpsters off public roads, rights-of-ways and sidewalks and at least six feet from the road, and it bans parking commercial vehicles rated at 10,000 pounds or more on residential streets and property, except while making local deliveries. Vehicles left on a Town highway during a snowstorm, or left unattended where they block traffic, may be towed.
