Parking and permits

North Hempstead rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In North Hempstead, a portable storage container on a property needs a Town permit, which lasts no more than 30 days unless the Building Inspector extends it.

These rules come from the Town of North Hempstead code, which governs unincorporated areas such as Manhasset, Port Washington and Roslyn Heights; incorporated villages have their own codes. A storage container on a property needs a permit and is limited to one container of up to 120 square feet for 30 days unless extended, while a dumpster or storage bin on a street or sidewalk needs a Superintendent of Highways permit for up to 30 days. Commercial vehicles, including those with trailer plates, may not park on residential streets from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and snow emergency routes must be clear during a declared snow emergency.
