Parking and permits

Oyster Bay rules for moving trucks, trailers and containers.

Key rule: In Oyster Bay, commercial vehicles may not be parked or left standing on any Town street between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., except while making deliveries or providing service to a home on that street.

These rules come from the Town of Oyster Bay code, which covers the Town's unincorporated hamlets such as Hicksville, Massapequa and Syosset; incorporated villages have their own codes. The Town bars commercial vehicles from its streets overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless they are delivering or serving a resident, and lets furniture sit on the sidewalk for up to an hour while loading or unloading. During a snow emergency, snow routes must be cleared, and parking on other streets alternates sides by year.

Rules and fees change. Confirm on the city's page before move day. Comparing cities? Moving permit rules for every New York city.

Oyster Bay moving questions

Can a moving truck stay on the street overnight in Oyster Bay?

Commercial vehicles may not be parked or left standing on any Town street between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The Town defines a commercial vehicle by its plate (commercial, bus, farm, livery, school, taxi, tow truck or tractor, among others) or, without such a plate, a seating capacity over nine. Deliveries and service to the occupants of a home on the street are not barred.

Can furniture sit on the sidewalk during a move?

Yes, temporarily. In the unincorporated Town, goods and household furniture may be placed on the sidewalk while loading or unloading, without unnecessary delay and for no longer than one hour.

Can I put out cones to save a space for the truck?

No. The Town code bars placing items such as traffic cones or barricades in the curb, gutter or street in front of a property.

What if it snows on moving day in Oyster Bay?

No vehicle may be parked on a designated snow route during a declared snow emergency or when the National Weather Service predicts three inches of snow or more. On other streets during a snow emergency, parking is banned on the odd-numbered side in even-numbered years and on the even-numbered side in odd-numbered years.
