Quiet hours: when you can load a moving truck, by city
Many cities limit noisy work such as loading, unloading and handling boxes at night and early in the morning. Here are the official quiet-hour rules for every city we've researched.
Updated October 24, 2026

An early start makes moving day shorter. But in many cities, loading a truck at dawn can break the noise rules. Some cities name loading and unloading. Others limit construction noise or any noise that disturbs neighbors at night.
We recorded the official quiet-hour rules for 313 cities.
Planning your start time
- Start within the allowed hours for the city at each address.
- Check building rules too. Apartments and HOAs often set stricter move hours than the city, and some require an elevator reservation.
- Count the truck's engine and liftgate. Idling and liftgate noise count as noise too.
